By having a spring that is not only captive but the linear rate at full extension you have good ground pressure even when at near full flex, which dramatically adds to vehicle stability when offroad. A short hard spring transmits forces from bumps back into the vehicle much more and doesn't allow the shock to actually do its jobs of controlling the motion of the suspension.
